Dried coconut, pressed in a wooden Mara Chekku
Heat, solvents, bleaching, deodorising, sulphur
Virgin coconut oil, also sold as cold pressed coconut oil, extracted fresh using a traditional wood press (Mara Chekku) with no heat, no solvents and no bleaching. It retains the natural MCTs, lauric acid and antioxidants that refined coconut oil loses in processing. Available in 1 L and 2 L.
Why choose Rulife cold pressed virgin coconut oil
In Kerala, Tamil Nadu and coastal Karnataka coconut oil is not a speciality item, it is the default cooking fat – and the flavour it carries is half the reason those dishes taste the way they do. Use it for tempering mustard seeds and curry leaves, for avial and thoran, for fish curry, and for dosa and uttapam where a little brushed on the tawa gives the edges their crispness.
Its smoke point is around 175-200°C, lower than groundnut or mustard. That makes it well suited to sauteing, tempering and everyday medium-heat cooking, and less suited to long sessions of deep frying – use cold pressed groundnut oil for that. A tablespoon also stirs cleanly into coffee or a smoothie for the MCTs.
Coconut oil is one of the few oils demonstrated to penetrate the hair shaft rather than simply coating it. Its lauric acid has a low molecular weight and a straight chain, which lets it pass into the cortex and reduce the protein loss that washing causes.
The traditional method still works best: warm a little between the palms, work it into the scalp and along the lengths, leave it for at least half an hour – overnight if you can – then shampoo out. Once or twice a week is plenty. If your hair is fine, keep it to the mid-lengths and ends rather than the roots. More in cold pressed coconut oil for hair and skin.
Malish with coconut oil is routine across much of India, and unrefined oil is the right choice for it: no fragrance, no mineral oil, no preservatives on a baby’s skin. Warm a small amount in your palms until it liquefies, then massage gently with the grain of the limbs, ideally before a bath.
Patch test on a small area first and wait a day, particularly for newborns or babies with eczema. Check with your paediatrician before starting on a newborn. Note that coconut oil is comedogenic, so while it suits body skin it may not suit acne-prone adult facial skin.
Best for: South Indian cooking, curries, dosas and chutney tempering, bulletproof coffee, oil pulling, hair oiling, skincare and baby massage.
100% pure · No additives · FSSAI certified · Wood pressed Mara Chekku
Cold pressed coconut oil is extracted from dried or fresh coconut kernel by mechanical pressing at low temperature, without heat or chemical solvents. This preserves the lauric acid, MCTs, vitamin E and natural aroma that high-heat refining destroys.
In everyday use the terms overlap and are often used interchangeably. Both describe unrefined coconut oil extracted without high heat or chemicals, as opposed to refined, bleached and deodorised coconut oil. The key distinction that matters when buying is unrefined versus refined.
Coconut oil solidifies below roughly 24C. This is completely normal and is one of the simplest indicators of genuine, unadulterated coconut oil. Stand the bottle in warm water to liquefy it. Oil that stays liquid through a cold winter has usually been blended.
It is one of the few oils shown to penetrate the hair shaft rather than just coating it, which is why it has been used across South India for generations. See cold pressed coconut oil for hair and skin.
Yes for everyday cooking, sauteing and tempering. Its smoke point is around 175 to 200C, which is lower than groundnut or mustard oil, so it is better suited to medium-heat cooking than to prolonged deep frying.
Refined coconut oil is bleached and deodorised, leaving a neutral oil with a higher smoke point but no aroma and reduced antioxidant content. Cold pressed keeps the coconut character and the nutrients. See cold pressed oil vs refined oil.
It is widely used as a moisturiser and for baby massage. Patch test first, and note that coconut oil is comedogenic, so it may not suit acne-prone facial skin.
Cool, dark place with the cap closed tightly. It will move between solid and liquid with the weather, which does not affect quality. Always use a dry spoon.
South Indian cooking, hair oiling and baby massage. It sets solid below 24°C; warm the bottle in water to melt it.
