Grade A peanuts, pressed in a wooden Mara Chekku

What's not

Heat, chemical solvents, refining, blending with other oils

About this product

Cold pressed groundnut oil, also known as wood pressed peanut oil, extracted in a traditional wooden ghani (Mara Chekku) with zero heat, zero chemicals and zero refining. Made from Grade A peanuts, our kachi ghani groundnut oil keeps the natural vitamin E, monounsaturated fats and bold nutty aroma that refined oils destroy. Available in 1 L and 2 L.

Is cold pressed groundnut oil good for deep frying?

Yes – it is the best of our three oils for it. Groundnut oil smokes at around 232°C, comfortably above the 170-190°C most Indian deep frying happens at. It is also high in oleic acid, which is what keeps an oil stable when it is held hot for a long time instead of breaking down and turning bitter.

Reusing it: strain it through a fine sieve once it has cooled, keep it in a separate jar, and reuse it two or three times at most. Discard it as soon as it darkens, smells sharp, or starts foaming at the edges. Those are the signs it has oxidised, and no oil is worth eating past that point.

Why choose Rulife wood pressed groundnut oil

  • Wood pressed (Mara Chekku) at low temperature, never refined or solvent extracted
  • High smoke point of 232C, one of the best Indian oils for deep frying
  • Rich in vitamin E and heart-friendly monounsaturated fats
  • High in oleic acid, which keeps it stable at frying temperatures
  • Naturally nutty aroma that carries into the food, unlike neutral refined oil
  • Cholesterol free, with nothing added and nothing stripped out

Best for: deep frying, bhindi and other dry sabzis, peanut chutney, poha, upma, South Indian cooking, salad dressings and everyday tadkas.

What it costs, and why

Rulife cold pressed groundnut oil is ₹349 per litre (₹659 for 2 L). Refined groundnut oil sells for less, and the reason is yield: a slow wooden ghani leaves oil behind in the cake that a high-heat expeller with a solvent wash forces out. You are paying for the litres that refining recovers by force, and for the vitamin E and aroma that the bleaching and deodorising stages remove. Read cold pressed oil vs refined oil.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is cold pressed groundnut oil?

Cold pressed groundnut oil is extracted by crushing peanuts in a wooden ghani at low temperature, without heat or chemical solvents. Refined groundnut oil is extracted using high heat and hexane, then bleached and deodorised, which strips out the vitamin E and the aroma.

Is cold pressed groundnut oil good for health?

It is high in monounsaturated fat and vitamin E, cholesterol free, and more stable at high temperatures than most seed oils because of its oleic acid content. That combination makes it one of the better choices for Indian frying. See best cooking oil for heart health.

Can cold pressed groundnut oil be used for deep frying?

Yes, and it is one of the best options for it. With a smoke point around 232C it holds up to repeated frying better than coconut or olive oil, and it does not break down or turn bitter at high heat.

What is the difference between groundnut oil and peanut oil?

They are the same oil. Groundnut is the common Indian term and peanut the common Western one. You may also see it called moongphali oil or verkadalai ennai.

What is the difference between cold pressed and refined groundnut oil?

Cold pressed retains the vitamin E, natural antioxidants and roasted-peanut aroma. Refined oil is neutral, odourless and has a longer shelf life, but the processing removes most of what made the oil worth eating. See cold pressed oil vs refined oil.

Is wood pressed the same as cold pressed?

Wood pressed, or Mara Chekku, is a specific traditional form of cold pressing that uses a slow-turning wooden ghani. The slower rotation generates less friction heat than a modern steel expeller, so the oil stays cooler during extraction.

Does it smell strongly of peanuts?

Yes, and that is the point. A pronounced nutty aroma is the clearest sign the oil has not been deodorised. If a groundnut oil smells of nothing, it has been refined.

How should I store it?

Cool, dark place, cap tightly closed. Cold pressed oils contain no artificial preservatives, so keep it away from the stove and direct light, and use within six months of opening.

How to use it

Everyday cooking and deep frying. Smoke point is about 232°C, above most Indian frying.
